A Bridge Across the Gardens
A creek, a rope, a fallen tree and two boys
When their mother gave them a rope and said they could do anything they wanted with it while they stayed with us, I became concerned! Our daughter must have seen the thoughts of mischief rising by the grins on the boys’ faces. And the terrified look on mine. So, she added a caveat about tying their grandparents to trees. Or running the rope through all the handles on doors leading to the outside with us inside. Phew!
Kidding aside, our grandsons were known for their robust outpours wherever they went. They loved to play (and fight) and were on many sports teams in grade school into high school. Their abundance of energy led our daughter to suggest they stay with us while she and our son-in-law went on a mission trip. The boys promised to help with outdoor chores such as clearing away fallen branches and digging holes for planting. They were a welcome power source for as long as it lasted and then we let them let loose on the grounds to enjoy their play fights and climb trees.
One large tree fell across our creek that spring and was too thick to remove. So, of course, the boys were eager to run across it. That was fine when mum and dad were supervising, but not when Gran was responsible for possible injuries.
